Formal Glossary

Terminology that is considered perfectly acceptable in polite vampire society.

Bastion - The subterreanean headquarters of a Society.
Black Matter - The essence of the Vampire Curse.
Bloating - When a Vampire overfeeds.
Bloodletting - The act of cutting or stabbing a prey item for the collection of their blood.
Book of Phoenix Song; The - A mythical text that is said to contain the secrets of resurrection.
Brood - A group of Fledglings that live under the same Sire.
Brood Mother - A Vampiress who has Sired several Fledglings. The term can only be used if the Fledglings live with her.
Catacomb - A subterranean network of corridors that provides Society services.
Cold Sleep; The - The three day coma that all living beings experience before rising as Vampires.
Council - A body of Vampires selected to manage the affairs of their corresponding Society.
Count/Countess - The legally chosen vampiric authority of a county or region. Always a member of a Council.
Corporeal - An undead creature in a tangible body. Plural is Corporeals.
Crypt - An underground chamber that is the lowest floor of a Vampire's Lair.
Daywalker - A Vampire who is active during the day.
Daywalking - Vampiric daytime activity. As direct sunlight doesn't kill any documented strains, this is completely doable, albeit at a cost of one's powers until sunset.
Dhampir - A Vampire created by artifical means, always by the powers of a Relic. The original creators of these relics were rumoured to be a Vampire-Human duo, thus why the term "Dhampir" is used.
Erdstall - A type of earthen tunnel. Mainly used for quiet, secretive travel.
Ethereal - An undead creature in an intangible body. Plural is Ethereals.
Exsanguination - Death by loss of blood. This is how Vampires kill their prey.
Familiar - The human servant of a Vampire.
Feeding - The act of consuming blood.
Flaring - A threatening stance that a Vampire makes when agitated or frightened.
Fledgling - A Vampire less than ten years into their condition.
Fledging - A time between a Vampire's Undeath and the tenth anniversary of their Undeath.
Gourmet - A Vampire who consumes human food. While it is not nourishing at all, human food is extremely pleasurable due to the enhanced senses of the Vampire.
Group Feeding - When several Vampires agree to feed together.
Harem - A group of vampires that live with their sire for romantic and sexual reasons. This is considered normal.
Husk - The remains of a Vampire who has starved to their True Death.
Initiation - When a Vampire joins a Society.
Keeper - A male Vampire who gathers and supervises a Harem. This is a male-only term at this point in time.
Lair - The living space of a Vampire; above or below ground.
Marbling - When a Vampire's skin becomes completely white, like that of a marble statue.
Master/Mistress - The term a Familiar must use for the Vampire they're currently serving.
Mottling - When a Vampire's skin becomes ruddy and multicoloured, like that of a corpse.
Mutation - An unusual trait that has manifested in a Vampire.
Nocturnal - A Vampire. Most used by Victorian era Vampires. Plural is Nocturnals.
Nocturne - A group of Vampires.
Overfeeding - Excessive feeding, which can cause Bloating.
Prey - A blanket term for all beings in the Kingdom Animalia.
Prey-Drive - The instinctive inclination of a Vampire to find, pursue and capture prey.
Ranger - A Vampire hired by a Council to patrol and supervise designated swathes of land.
Reaping - The act of feeding upon the dead and dying.
Relic - An object enchanted by a Vampire.
Rogue - A Vampire who is completely unaffiliated with any societies.
Roost - A Lair specifically designed for communal living.
Roosting - The act of sleeping upside down; most associated with communal living.
Satano-Vampirism - A blanket term for all Vampiric adaptations of Satanism. First used to describe Vampire-run Hellfire Clubs.
Senseshock - When a Vampire's enhanced senses become overwhelmed, often causing them to flee or become paralysed from the ensuing stress.
Sire - A Vampire that has decided to create a new Vampire.
Society - A country's secret society of Vampires. These elusive organisations pride themselves on self-sufficiency and the safekeeping of Vampires around the world.
Society Member - A Vampire who has initiated into a Society.
Starvation - The slow aging and decomposition of a Vampire that results from a lack of Blood. Is fatal if not treated.
Stock - A Vampire's stored blood supply.
Tenets; The - A set of universal laws created to keep the entire Vampire species safe from extinction.
Tenet Violation - A breach of the Tenets.
Tome - A spell-book that Vampires use to learn their magic from.
Torpor - A deep sleep that a Vampire can choose to enter, most famously for centuries at a time. For the sleep to be considered a Torpor, it must be a minimum of six months.
Trophallaxis - Mouth-to-mouth feeding performed by Vampires. Most done by Sires to their Fledgling.
Undeath - The transformation from human to Vampire. Can be used to describe the transformation from human to other types of Undead, but is chiefly used to describe Vampirism.
Undeath of Man - A famous historical text that discusses the origins of Vampires and the spread of Vampirism throughout the world.
Unsheathing - When a Vampire reveals their fangs/barbed tongue/probocis.
Vampire Hunter - A human that has dedicated their life to the pursuit and killing of Vampires.
Vampiress - A female Vampire.
Vampyre - A variant of the word "Vampire"; most used by Victorian era Vampires.
Varnish - Snuff Tobacco, which is commonly enjoyed by wealthy Vampires.
Vessel - A blanket term for coffins, caskets, and any other funerary containers that Vampires sleep in.
Visage - The human disguise that all Vampires can take on.
Viscount - The top-assistant to a Count.
Wight - A Vampire. Was used commonly before the word "Vampire" made its way into the English language in 1732.
Wither - A Vampire suffering from Starvation.
Withering - A term for Starvation.
